At the June 3, 2015 TC-ISWEN 25th annual meeting and 1st annual symposium, Indigenous social workers, educators and students will gather to address topics of interest to our communities and within institutions of higher education.
Musqueam Elder, Dr. Vincent Stogan shared the teaching of hands back and hands forward. He said that when we gather to share our knowledge and to discuss important ‘work’, we stand in circle to give thanks and to show our support for one another by holding hands. We hold our left palm upward to symbolize reaching back to receive help from our Ancestors and those who have walked before us. We learn to use these teachings and our responsibility is to help those who come after us. We then extend our right palm downwards as a symbol giving help. This is the teaching of hands back and hands forward (http://blogs.ubc.ca/edst591/)
Formal research presentations and papers, interactive presentations and facilitated discussions with peers regarding research or teaching are particularly encouraged.
REQUIREMENTS: To present a paper at the TC-ISWEN meeting, please send the following information:
By March 2, 2015 to shelly.johnson@ubc.ca with the words “TC-ISWEN Call for Papers” in the subject line:

We seek up to six 20-minute papers or presentations that address the theme of “Hands Back, Hands
Forward” that connects past, current and future Indigenous research topics, projects, and issues related
to social work education, research and/or teaching with, for and by Indigenous peoples.

- a 2-page abstract to address the issues/topics of the “Hands Back, Hands Forward” theme
- a list of presenters or authors

Clarity of the written proposal
Clarity of the research methodology or conceptual basis
Strength of the analytical or theoretical framework
Importance of teaching, practice, research, policy or theory in the field of Indigenous social work Applicants will be e-notified by March 23, 2015 of the committee’s decision.
